A pedestrian is in critical condition after being mowed down by a hit-and-run driver in Astoria early Friday morning.

The victim, a 33-year-old man, was hit while crossing at the intersection of 31st Avenue and 33rd Street at around 3:40 a.m., according to police.

The driver, who was in a black sedan, was traveling westbound along 31st Avenue when he plowed into the man, the NYPD said. The driver fled the scene.

The victim was hit while attempting to cross northbound on 33 Street.

Police received a 911 call that the man had been struck. Officers found him unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway, with head and body trauma.

The victim was transported by EMS to NYC Health & Hospitals/Elmhurst and remains in critical condition.

A lot people leave the bars on Steinway, 30th Ave, Broadway and get on the driver seat late night. Guess what happens afterwards…

Terrible, that street is like a drag strip sometimes.
BTW 33 St goes North and South so how could the victim cross the street northbound?

that intersection is a death trap with cars speeding, running red lights and making turns onto 33rd street with utter disdain for pedestrians.

I hope the person is ok. We’ve been begging for speed cameras, speed bumps and speed enforcement of any kind along 33rd street for years, but we’ve never been successful. It’s especially dangerous the closer you get to Astoria Blvd. We refer to it as “Fury Road.” Any traffic calming measures on this street would be very welcome!
