Stop & Shop supermarket will be closing its 48th Street location in Long Island City later this year, the company has confirmed.
A representative for Stop & Shop said the company decided not to renew its lease at its 34-51 48th Street store and will close in coming months—although a closing date has yet to be established.
“After a detailed review of the operating performance of our stores, we have made the difficult decision to not renew our lease at our store…,” said Stefanie Shuman, external communications manager for Stop & Shop.
The company will offer its employees positions at other area Stop & Shop locations once the store closes.
“We intend to operate the Long Island City Stop & Shop store until later in the year, and we will continue to serve the community during this time,” Shuman said. “It is early in the process and a specific closing date has not been determined.”
The announcement comes 12 months after BJ’s Wholesale Club opened its Long Island City store across the street at 34-60 48th St.

Supermarkets continue to shut down while remaining stores become increasingly crowded. Lack of competition in this space. It doesn’t make sense. Where will we go for food? Nothing is affordable anymore.
No! I love this store! Always clean, stocked and with helpful employees plus the parking is great too. Only downside was the lack of carts but wait a few mins and someone was always coming back with carts. Very sad this is going.
It’s a shame. A store that served our community for so long of a time
is forced to close because of rent increases and probably Insuarnce increases too. This store was well put
together and well maintained.
The employees were great, the shelves stocked well, big aisles, knowledgeable, helpful, kind employees,
great parking.
First it was Key Food on 31st Street
and now Stop and Shop.
Wonder what will take it’s place???
Now I’ll have to figure out where else
I can shop.
I miss old Astoria!!!
LT. Dan, Other than Parisi’s, Rudy’s Hobbies, and Sparr’s Antiques, there is nothing left anymore of the old Astoria.
