Bohemian Hall teams up with Astoria Market vendors for outdoor, weeknight event

July 22, 2013 By Bill Parry

A group of local artists, bakers and designers set up shop outside the oldest beer garden in New York last Wednesday night for an event called “NY’s best browsing with brews”

Nearly 20 vendors from the Astoria Market sold their wares outside the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden for the first time—and the event was such as smash hit that the owners of the beer hall have plans to do it again.

“It was pretty good,” said Bohemian Hall general manager Larry Spacek. “We put it outside where the customers are and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”

Vendors from the Astoria Market typically sell their goods on Sundays in the “main hall” at the Bohemian Beer Garden but this time they sold them outside the well-known venue on a weeknight.

Spacek said he decided to shift the vendors out front to try something new. “We wanted to make things interesting for the midweek crowd, create something unusual, and it worked,” Spacek said.

“They were selling art, jewelry and even soaps,” Spacek said. He said that the outdoor, mid-week event was so successful that they will do it again on Wednesday, August 14, and Wednesday, September 18, if the weather cooperates.

The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden has been selling Czech and German beers—as well as food like kielbasa and chicken and pork schnitzel–since 1910.
