Suspect Wanted For Stealing Car After Owner Leaves Keys In Ignition

March 4, 2020 By Michael Dorgan

The police released video footage today of an individual wanted for stealing a car near the Astoria Heights Playground in January.

The suspect allegedly stole a 1999 Volvo sedan on Jan. 16 at around 8 p.m. across from 30-39 43rd St., after the owner left her keys in the ignition, according to police.

The 63-year-old victim was leaving food for cats when the thief entered the vehicle and then drove off, police said.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle in front of 41-16 Broadway a short time later.

Police said the suspect was captured on CCTV making a $25 purchase with the victim’s credit card that was left inside the vehicle, at Wendy Wine and Liquor Store, located at 51-13 Broadway, in Woodside.

Anyone with information in regard to the identity of this individual is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the CrimeStoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM, or on Twitter @ NYPDTips.

It is the victim’s fault. I went to a self service gas station this week and had to go inside to talk to the cashier. I closed the gas cap, took my bag and locked the car. Common sense and taking responsibility for your own actions goes a long way.

People need to have some common sense when it comes to crime prevention. Just last month, the 114th Precinct warned “Astoria residents to keep their windows and doors locked and to consider purchasing security systems.” Perhaps they need to warn people about not leaving their car keys in the ignition when stepping out to feed the stray cats.

No the driver isnt wrong. It may not be the smartest thing to do but last i checked its a crime to take something thats not yours, and then help yourself to that persons credit card to go get your liquor. Damn use your brain logic like yours is the reason theres guys like this clown who stole the car.

It’s a good thing he will be released after processing with no bail so that he isn’t inconvenienced and can get right back to committing non-violent offenses. Well done NYC!
