The annual 4th of July fireworks display will take place at Astoria Park on Thursday.

Organized by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition Inc.(CALDC), the celebration will take place on the Great Lawn exactly a week before Independence Day.

The non-profit organization has been hosting the 4th of July event since the 1980s and the June 27 display marks its 35th anniversary of doing so.

The display will be preceded by a performance from the Queens Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m., with the fireworks anticipated to light up the skies from approximately 9:15 p.m. onwards.

The free event was attended by over 20,000 people last year and organizers are expecting a similar turnout on Thursday, according to CALDC Program Manager Roxy Tico.

Tico said that the event has always taken place a week before July 4th to account for those who vacation on Independence Day.

“We want to get as many of our community members and people from the adjacent areas to attend before people go away,” Tico said. “We want to ring in summer and ring in our summer concerts,” she concluded.

It’s a wonderful event, but was better twenty years ago before it became a total zoo. The bloom has been off the rose since two thousand.

An unattended toddler sucker punched me in the nose while I relaxed on my towel gazing at the darkening sky waiting for the show to start. Parents didn’t even apologize or acknowledge me. Bummed me out 🙁
