Construction is expected to begin this fall on a 3-story addition to the main school building at P.S. 2 in East Elmhurst.

The building will replace the beaten-up modular building that currently covers a portion of the school yard. The addition is expected to cater to about 120 of the 600 students who attend the 75-10 21st Ave. school.

The modular building, which was meant to be a temporary fix, has been part of the school landscape for more than two decades. Twenty percent of the students at the school are taught in it.

The School Construction Authority, which is overseeing the project, expects the addition to be complete by September 2021. The addition will include four classrooms for either Pre-K or kindergarten, in addition to one standard classroom, art and music classrooms, and an exercise area.

Demolition permits for the modular building were filed in August 2018. Once construction starts, the modular building will be bulldozed and the students will be taught in the main school building for the duration of the project.

Plans for the addition were first announced in Oct. 2017 by local officials.

In the past 4 years the traffic on 49th street has become more congested with bigger trucks, and speeding cars also cars going the wrong way. At this point it’s becoming more dangerous.

How will this effect parking on that block? Between alternate side parking, no parking on school days and bus stops along Ditmars Blvd. the residents have limited parking already!!

Thats awesome but how about addressing the issue of illegal truck traffic barrelling up 75 th Street doing 30 mph, slamming into the speed bump right in front of the school playground. All while children and parents are crossing the street.
72 residents, including Council member Costas Constantinides, have signed a petition requesting that traffic on the lower part of 75th Street connected to 20th Avenue, be re-directed. This would prevent illegal truck traffic from entering lower 75th Street while traveling up to Ditmars Blvd. Trucks do this because the legal truck route is Hazen Street. Hazen Street does not cross over Astoria Blvd. The correct truck route should be 49th Street. This is a wide street that crosses over Astoria Blvd. giving trucks the option of turning East or West. This petition has been given to CB1 and the DOT Commissioner. I have not heard back from anyone. Mr. Constantinides, seeing that you agree with this because you signed this petition, CAN YOU HELP?
