The renovation of the “children’s room” inside the Broadway library begins Sept. 8—a project that is expected to take four months to complete.

The library, located at 40-20 Broadway, will have a revamped “children’s room” that will feature more space, a self-check station, more computers, new décor and brand new furniture. It will also include a model train.

During construction, a temporary children’s room will open on the lower level. That room is schedule to open on Monday, Sept 15, and will provide limited service.

The main floor areas of the library will remain open and available throughout construction.

The revamp is just one of many upgrades that are expected to come to libraries in Astoria.

The city allocated $655,000 toward upgrades to the Steinway branch, located at 21-45 31st Street. Those funds will be used to buy new furniture, lighting and to upgrade the children’s area. A new elevator will also be installed.

The Astoria Branch, located at 14-01 Astoria Boulevard, will be receiving a self check-in book vestibule.

That’s good news, but I wonder why they are installing a new elevator when the one they have is certainly ADA compliant. Sure, it’s slow, but elevators are very expensive and I wonder if our money is not better spent elsewhere. Sorry to be suspicious but given some of the corruption inherent in previous library renovations, I would be interested in some oversight.
