Parents and kids are invited to get the school year off to a good start at a special Queens Library- Astoria open house Saturday.

Parents who attend the Sept. 29 event at the library (14-01 Astoria Blvd.) will get to participate in a hands-on demonstration of free library resources and websites that provide learning materials.

While parents are learning about the library’s resources, kids will get to have some fun of their own— crafting gliders from plastic straws, index cards and tape.

Back-to-school events are being held at libraries across the city, but the events at each library will be tailored to specific communities, according to a spokesperson for Queens Library.

In Astoria, the demonstration will focus on two educational websites,  EngageNY.org and ABCmouse.com, which offer learning activities and materials.

EngageNY.org is a free site maintained by the New York State Education Department, whereas ABCmouse.com is a subscription-based site free to parents with library cards.

The library staff will also present other library resources, including free after-school programs, such as homework assistance and science-related activities; immigration assistance; and GED preparatory classes.

The event is free and open to all from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.
