Neighborhood Bar to Say Farewell This Friday

Aug. 28, 2018 By Tara Law

An Astoria bar and grill on Hoyt Avenue is closing its doors after nearly four years in business.

Z Bar, located at 26-12 Hoyt Avenue, will close this Friday, bar owner Rizwan “Wiz” Khan confirmed yesterday.

Khan hoped that Z Bar would become the “Cheers” of Astoria— “an unpretentious place, where everyone would be treated like family,” according to the restaurant’s website.

Besides a full alcohol and American bar food menu, Z Bar also hosted events such as karaoke and trivia nights.

Yelp reviewers praised the friendliness of the bartenders and the welcoming energy in the bar.

“This place felt like a family bar,” wrote reviewer Tracy M.

She continued, “Everyone knows each others [sic] and is friendly with each other. It was quite interesting to observe as an outsider. I didn’t feel lost and alone or anything either, it’s very chill.”

Khan reached out to customers on his personal Facebook page to let them know about the closure and to thank them for their patronage. He did not say why the establishment is closing.

“We are sad to say GOOD-BYE but better things are in store for everyone!!!” Khan wrote.

Op-ed: The power of representation in healthcare

Apr. 17, 2025 By Dr. Ifeanyi Oguagha

As physicians of color at Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center (JPAFHC), we regularly witness how representation in healthcare can save lives.
