An 81-year-old Queensbridge Houses man who went missing Saturday has been located by his family at Elmhurst Hospital, police say.
Berstford Bernard had been last seen inside his building at 40-03 Vernon Blvd on Saturday morning. The Bernard family contacted the police last night to inform them that Berstford was found safely.
Police say that Bernard was treated at the hospital and is “alert and conscious.”
Elroy Bernard, who identified himself as Berstford’s son, wrote to the Astoria Post last night to express his gratitude to all the people who had helped find his father, including the 114th Precinct, Queensbridge Houses residents and the Long Island City YMCA.
Elroy thanked various people who, he said, “offered time, expertise, advice, thoughts and prayers. There are no words to express how thankful we are for our community. Take care of each other. Much love.”

I grew up in QB 40-13 VB ’till I purchased a family home in Astoria. And I remember Mr. Bernard being respectful and polite. He was always a quiet, easy going, hardworking family man! I’m glad this had a good ending, as he deserves it. Elroy, if you read this, consider getting him a personalized bracelet with contact info. All the best.
Great news. I hope the hospital stay was for something minor and he is as good as new.
