Grab-and-Go Buffet “BT Kitchen” Opens on Broadway

A buffet-style restaurant serving a variety of American and international dishes has opened on Broadway.

BT Kitchen, a grab-and-go style buffet, opened at 31-16 Broadway in May near the Broadway (N/W) subway station. The eatery offers customers the ability to build their own plates with an assortment of dishes, such as General Tso’s chicken, crayfish, sweet plantains and baked salmon.

The owner, 39-year-old Whitestone resident Jason Zhang, said that he learned the business by running his family’s restaurant New Grand Buffet at 34-45 48th St.

Zhang and his family have tested many recipes in the 19 years they have operated that buffet, and BT will serve many of their customers’ favorites, Zhang said.

These dishes include Chinese items such as Hong Kong steak (ribeye with special sauce); Caribbean dishes like Jamaican peppered shrimp; and American favorites like baked salmon and french fries.

Customers can choose from prearranged combos, such as a plate with teriyaki chicken, garlic seafood, baked spinach and mashed potatoes, which are sold for $7.99. Restaurant goers can also choose to build their own plates— which include two main dishes and two side dishes— for $8.99.

“People can try out different kinds of food— American, Chinese, Italian— to make a combo,” Zhang said.

Zhang said that the eatery offers fresh food and that customers can tell by the smell, color and taste.

Not all foods keep well when they are served from a buffet, Zhang said. However, he said, he knows how to keep items fresh from his experience at New Grand Buffet.

The new location is significantly smaller than his other location, but it is designed for commuters to stop by and pick up food on their way home from the train, Zhang said.

Eight bar stool seats are also available to customers.

The eatery also plans to launch a delivery service in July.
