Restaurant, with focus on pizza and Balkan food, opens

BalkanJuly 9, 2014 By Michael Florio

A new restaurant offering New York City pizza as well as food from the Balkans opened recently.

Trakia Pizza & Grill, located at 38-14 30th Ave, serves pizza as well as food from the Balkan Peninsula, a South East European region that incorporates parts of Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece and Turkey.

The Balkan food on the menu consists of Plejeskavica (a Balkan Burger comprised of a one-pound meat patty, served on toasted lepinja bread) as well as shish kabobs, fish kebabs, among other items.

“We are serving a range of food from this region of the world,” said Alex Dimiprov, the owner of the establishment, adding that many restaurants in Astoria focus on offering items from just one of these European locations, but none serve food from across the entire region.

The restaurant also has a brick oven, which is being used to prepare dishes such as sirene po shopski (a traditional Bulgarian dish made from tomatoes and “sirene” (feta cheese)) and chicken guvech, which is a chicken and vegetable stew.

The dough used to make pizza does not contain any preservatives and is all-natural, Dimiprov said. He said a small 12 inch cheese pie will cost $13.95, and pies with toppings such as buffalo chicken, artichoke or mushrooms will cost $19.95. A slice starts at $3.

Dimiprov said the restaurant can seat 45 people inside and he hopes to set up sidewalk seating.

Dimiprov picked this location mainly because of the municipal parking lot located on the block and the enormous foot traffic that the popular area brings.

“The area is very busy, there are always people walking by,” Dimiprov said.
