Katch Brewery and new Ditmars cafe get green light for sidewalk cafes

Sidewalk seating coming to Katch

June 23, 2014 By Michael Florio

Two new Astoria bars/restaurants will be adding sidewalk seating this summer, after being approved by Community Board 1.

Katch Brewery Grill, located at 31-19 Newtown Ave, went before the board seeking 13 tables and 26 seats last week.  The board approved the application unanimously.

The pub’s owners and managers had been working on the application for the past three months and were excited to be able to able to provide customers with the option of sitting out front.

“Customers have asked about this since we opened,” said Tino Tsupras, the general manager. Katch opened in May 2013.

The bar/restaurant is planning on opening the sidewalk seating area after the World Cup ends on July 13. The World Cup has helped the establishment draw big crowds, Tsupras said.

Meanwhile, 60 Beans, a café that is still under construction at 36-02 Ditmars Blvd, was also approved for sidewalk seating. The board granted it with the right to operate six tables and 12 seat once it opens.

Originally, 60 Beans, which is owned by the proprietors of Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company, was going to apply for 12 tables and 24 seats, but decided to reduce it to prevent the space from being cluttered.

The tables will be located on the 36th Street side.

Meanwhile, Sugar Freak, located at 36-18 30th Ave, had its unenclosed sidewalk café license renewed, allowing it to keep the six tables and 12 seats it has established.
