Fireworks, concerts and films all set to take place in Astoria Park this summer

June 9, 2014 By Michael Florio

The long tradition of summer time entertainment at Astoria Park will kick off June 30 with fireworks in celebration of Independence Day.

The Central Astoria Local Development Coalition, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the the greater neighborhood, will be hosting the event at 7:30 pm on the great lawn , which will also feature a performance by the Queens Symphony Orchestra.

The summer season will then kick into high gear on July 10 when the 2014 Waterfront Concert Series begins.

The concerts will be held every Thursday at 7:30 on the great Lawn, located on Shore Blvd between the Hell Gate Bridge and the Astoria Pool. They will run for six weeks through August 14th.

Concerts will serve as a tribute to the musicians and bands, such as the Beatles, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash.

The organization will also be screening films in the park. The movies will kick off on July 28 and will run every Monday night (starting at 8:30 pm) until August 25.

This year, however, there will be a twist. On August 11, the organization will be hosting a film based on the votes it received through its Facebook page and website earlier this year.

The Wizard of Oz was deemed the most popular.
