Parks Dept. will solicit ideas from residents at meeting tonight as it looks to revamp Chappeto Square, will start taking suggestions online on Tuesday

Oct. 30, 2017 By Christian Murray

The Parks Department is looking to revamp a small park located by the Triborough Bridge and is holding a public meeting Monday night to solicit ideas and has created a portal on it website to take suggestions starting Tuesday.

Chappetto Square, a 1.25 acre park located on Hoyt Ave (between 21st and 23rd streets), is about to undergo a makeover following its September selection as part of the Mayor’s NYC Community Parks Initiative (CPI) where it was named one of 11 sites to split $65 million to be upgraded.

The CPI is a $318 million citywide program that aims to renovate and upgrade 67 parks that have received less than $250,000 over the last 20 years.

The park, which currently contains a hockey rink and a flagpole, will be “totally reconstructed,” said Meghan Lalor, a spokeswoman for the Parks Dept.
Tonight’s meeting takes place at PS 85, located at 23-70 31st Street. It goes from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

Residents will have two weeks starting Tuesday to go online and post their ideas at https://www.nycgovparks.org/planning-and-building/input

The park was dedicated in his honor in 1949 as a sports and recreation for the youth of Astoria. Surprised parks spokesperson didn’t mention thst.

It’s a great spot for homeless Or to put parking. How about a giant bathroom? Maybe a little mall.

Op-Ed | Four years after Hurricane Ida, Queens deserves real climate resilience

Sep. 2, 2025 By Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas

Four years ago, Hurricane Ida tore through our neighborhoods of East Elmhurst, Corona and Jackson Heights, leaving behind devastation we will never forget. We lost neighbors to the floodwaters. Families saw their homes destroyed, their basements wiped out, their lives upended. Immigrant families—so many of them undocumented—were hit the hardest, often excluded from relief altogether. Ida was not just a storm; it was a wake-up call.
