Twenty local artisans to offer goods at Astoria market Sunday

Oct. 17, 2017 By Tara Law

A group of local artisans will be selling their creations at a market in Astoria this Sunday.

The Queens Craft Brigade, which consists of a group of 20 vendors, will sell their items on Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall (31-35 41st St.) from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The vendors will include greeting card makers Widycat; organic food and hot sauce maker Hellgate Farms; handcraft accessory designers Panchita’s Bodega; and silkscreened apparel by 34th Street Designs.

The event was organized for the first time in July by Astoria resident Robert Duffy, who operates a vintage inspired T-shirt company called Unified Queens. That event proved to be a success and another was held in September.

Duffy said that he enjoys working with the other creators from Queens, who are eager to share tips and ideas.

“What makes Queens [Craft Brigade] different is everyone is willingness to help one other,” Duffy said. “It’s no one’s full time job, and everyone is working nights and weekends.”

Food will be served by the Astoria restaurant Flattops, which will offer burgers on the back patio. The VFW’s bar will be open.

Hifi Records & Cafe will provide music and have records on sale.

Future markets will take place at the VFW on Nov. 19, and Dec. 10.
