NYPD appoints new commanding officer for Astoria’s 114th Precinct

Captain Osvaldo Nunez (NYPD)

Sept. 27, 2017 By Tara Law

The NYPD has appointed a new commanding officer for the 114th Precinct, which covers Astoria and sections of Long Island City, Woodside and Jackson Heights.

Captain Osvaldo Nunez, who has been with the NYPD for 21 years, took over the command on Monday from Deputy Inspector Peter Fortune, who had held the position since May 2015.

The 114th precinct is Nunez’ first appointment as a commanding officer. His career started at the 30th Precinct in Washington Heights and he has done stints at the 44th Precinct in the Bronx and the 33rd precinct in Washington Heights, where he was promoted to lieutenant. Nunez joined the Narcotics unit while at the 33rd precinct before being assigned to Special Operations at the NYPD Chief of Department’ office at 1 Police Plaza in 2011.

Fortune, who was given credit for the reduction in crime in the precinct, has been named the commanding officer of the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica.

“He did a remarkable job lowering the statistics for crime in our district,” said Florence Koulouris, the district manager for the Astoria community board. “We wish him the greatest success in his new assignment.”

Crime was down 18 percent in the precinct for the year through September 17, compared to the same period a year ago.

Koulouris said that Fortune helped bring the police closer to the community by embracing the NYPD;s neighborhood policing strategy. She said that she hopes Nunez will also have a strong relationship with the community.
