Big art pieces will be on display at Socrates Sculpture Park next month

Next month Socrates Sculpture Park will once again host its yearly display of large sculptures from new contemporary artists.

The display, called Socrates Annual, opens on Oct 1 and runs through March 11.

Each year, Socrates holds an open call for sculpture proposals from emerging artists. Out of 300 applicants, two curators select 15 artists to create works. Each artist receives a $5,000 grant and gets access to Socrates’ facilities.

“It’s a snapshot of contemporary art today,” said Katie Denny Horowitz, the director of external affairs for the Socrates Sculpture Park, which is located at 32-01 Vernon Boulevard.

According to Horowitz, the fellowship gives the public a unique opportunity to see artists at work out in the park. The artists are currently working on their sculptures for the exhibit.

I love Tanda’s sculpture of Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls aka B.I.G.! I am looking forward to this exhibit and I am so glad it is in Astoria.
