Astoria Park festivities–with Shore Blvd closed to traffic–scheduled for April 22, in celebration of Earth Day

April 14, 2017 By Hannah Wulkan

Astoria is going green.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, the Astoria Park Alliance is hosting a park cleanup and festival to celebrate the warm weather and kick off the summer season.

The park cleanup will run throughout the morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., including planting, raking and gardening with nonprofit group NY Cares. The volunteer work will continue from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with a shoreline cleanup hosted by Hornblower, the company in charge of the new East River ferry service.

To celebrate the newly cleaned up park, the festivities will kick off at 2 p.m. with live music and performances, fitness lessons, crafts, and other activities.

The Shore Fest Spring Kickoff celebration will feature kid-friendly activities such as a scavenger hunt in the park, recycling relay races, face painting, and more, and will also have a bee-keeping demonstration, sustainability clinics, and fitness classes such as yoga and Zumba for all ages.

Shore Boulevard will also be shut down to cars, offering free access between the park and waterfront without traffic interfering.

At 3:30, local Councilman Costa Constantinides will cut the ribbon on the newly refurbished bocce courts in the park, which have been under renovation for the last 8 months.

Many local groups and businesses will also have tables with information and giveaways along Shore Boulevard.
