A discount store on 30th Avenue that has been open for 25 years will be closing its doors for good next month.
The Bargain Stop, located in a two-story building at 33-02 30th Avenue, will shut down at the end of February after being open since 1991, DNAinfo first reported.
According to owner Peter Christakos, the store is shutting down to allow the landlord to develop the property, though he was unsure of what would replace the neighborhood institution. Plans have yet to be filed with the Department of Buildings.
“The world is changing and these stores just wont be around anymore,” Christakos said. “I feel bad for all the older generations, they don’t know what to do. I have had many customers come in crying because I’m shutting down and they don’t know where to go now.”
Christakos is running a closeout sale until February 28 when he closes for good, offering 20 percent or more off of everything in the store, which is already marked below mainstream store prices.
The Bargain Stop is not the first independent discount store to fall prey to larger developments. ABC Superstores on 31st Street also recently announced its closing.

So sad! 🙁 I used to always go here with my mom when I was little in the 90’s. But at least Twin Discount on Broadway is doing well.
