Filming of Marvel universe show is taking place in Astoria this afternoon/evening

Dec. 13, 2016 Staff Report

Film crews have taken over several Astoria blocks to film an upcoming addition to Netflix’s Marvel universe.

The filming for the series, based on “The Punisher” comics, is running through 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to signs in the area.

Crews are shooting footage on 24th Avenue, between Crescent Street and 27th Street, and also on several side streets, including Crescent Street and 26th Street between 23rd and 24th Avenue.

The project is being filmed by ABC Studios under the working title “Crime,” according to signs around the neighborhood.

Filming of the 13-episode series began in the City in October, and is slated to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2017. It is based on the Marvel series “The Punisher,” about a vigilante crime fighter in New York City.

Actor Jon Bernthal originated the character of Frank Castle, or The Punisher, in the second season of Netflix’s Marvel show “Daredevil,” and the spinoff was officially ordered to series in April. The new series will feature characters from “Daredevil,” as well as many new characters.

Other shows in Netflix’s Marvel universe on Netflix include “Dardevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and the upcoming “Iron Fist” and “The Defenders.”
