14-Story apartment building to go up, part of Astoria Houses complex

Oct. 4, 2016 By Hannah Wulkan

The New York City Housing Authority filed plans last month to build a new 14-story residential building at the Astoria Houses development.

The proposed 136-foot-tall building would be sited at 2-24 27th Avenue, which is currently a parking lot on the edge of Astoria Houses. It would contain 163 apartments, filling 126,176 square feet of residential space.

According to the permits filed, each floor would have between 10 and 13 apartments, and the cellar would contain amenities including a laundry room, a fitness room, lounge area, and storage.

The application also indicates that the new building would contain low-income housing, similar to the surrounding Astoria Houses, but did not specify if the entire building would be made up of affordable units.

Dattner Architects is designing the building, but did not return request for comment.

Dattner has worked on many high-profile buildings throughout the city, including the Department of Sanitation building at 51 Chambers Street in Manhattan, and the new Hudson Yards 7 train station, among many others.

The proposed building comes only a month after the City launched an $88 million reconstruction project at the Astoria Houses, aimed at repairing damage left by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, in addition to upgrading facilities and security.

NYCHA is a racist agency. Whites are disproportionately under represented in their developments. This outrage must be addressed.
