Construction has begun on a $1 million revamp of Sean’s Place Playground in Astoria.

The renovation of the playground, which is located on 38th Street between 31st Avenue and Broadway, was announced in 2014. Upon completion, it will add new play equipment, a spray shower, new pavements, fencing and plantings, according to Meghan Lalor, a spokesperson for the Parks Department.

The park was last rebuilt in the 1990s, Lalor said, and Mayor Bill de Blasio and Borough President Melinda Katz funded the $1 million revamp. Construction is slated to take about a year, and the park is slated to reopen sometime in September of 2017.

The project entered a design phase in July 2014, and began procurement in October 2015, which ended this July.

Once renovated, the park will include a play area for toddlers, a play are for older children, two reconstructed basketball courts, a handball court, swings, spray showers, and seating areas.
