W Train to roll into Astoria starting Nov. 7

The W train is returning to Queens.

Beginning on November 7 the W train, which was discontinued in 2010 due to MTA budget cuts, will start up again and will take the place of the Q train on the tracks in Astoria and Long Island City.

The change comes as the city prepares to open its new Second Avenue Line, which will allow the Q to run all the way up to 96th Street in Manhattan.

The MTA first announced the return of the W train in February, which will run local from Astoria-Ditmars station to Whitehall Street in Lower Manhattan, but will not continue in to Brooklyn as the Q did. Similarly to the Q, however, the W train will not run during late nights or on weekends.

The Q line will terminate at the 57th Street and 7th Avenue station, but will begin its service on Second Avenue between 63rd Street and 96th Street in December, said an MTA spokesperson. Once completed, the Second Avenue Line will run from 96th Street to Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn.

The Q train is also slated to provide late night service between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The R train will not be affected by these modifications.
