Nearly 500 Runners Expected for Saturday’s Hellgate 5K Fun Run, Celebrating the Centennial Birthday of Hellgate Bridge

Sept. 7, 2017 Staff Report

About 500 participants will be taking part in a 5K run at Astoria Park this Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Hellgate Bridge.

The fun run, which is part of a series of events put together by a committee led by Antonio Maloni to celebrate the 100-year milestone, is for both runners and walkers and will begin at 9:00am. Before the run, there will be a 100 meter kid’s race scheduled to begin at 8:30 am.

Race director and longtime runner Jessica Tusing said she and the Hellgate Road Runners Club are honored to host such a memorable event and to be partnered with the online news publication Astoria Post.

“As a running club, our members have ran in at least fifty different events throughout the years, including marathons and triathalons, but none of them make us feel as proud as being able to host such a 5K here in our backyard of Astoria,” said Tusing.

“The Astoria waterfront and the park are great places to run and people who don’t know that will see that when they take part in the 5K fun run,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Astoria Post parent company, Outer Boro Media.

Registration for the 5K is $30, but children below the age of 11 are free to participate as long as they still register online or in person.

Bag drop offs will be accepted, but due to the number of expected attendees, it is recommended that last minute sign ups arrive earlier than 8:00 am to line up and ensure timely registration.

I remember in the 70s I used to climb the bridge and walk over the arch to the other side. Fun times, great view. Many times walked the trax from Roosevelt ave.
