Delicias Caleñas takes over the space occupied by House of Prime Meat (Google)

A Colombian bakery opened in Astoria Monday, joining a chain of family-owned eateries.
Delicias Caleñas, a bakery and cafe located at 22-55 31st Street, offers empanadas, breads, coffee and fruit drinks, as well as full meals like the bandeja paisa, a traditional Colombian breakfast with rice, meat, avocado and eggs.
The bakery is located in the former space that was occupied by House of Prime Meat. The eatery offers counter service and has seating for eleven.
Ingrid Bedoya-Moreno, who co-owns the bakery, was born and raised in Astoria. She said that she has always wanted to open a restaurant in the neighborhood. The Astoria bakery is the fifth eatery in the chain, with two in Jackson Heights, one in Corona and another in Jamaica.
Bedoya said that she thinks the source of Delicias Caleñas’ success has been the quality of its ingredients and its pandebono— an authentic Colombian bread. Although she and her partner have opened four other restaurants, she said, the pandebono has remained excellent.
“It even got better,” Bedoya said.
She also credits the success of the chain to her employees creating a “homey feel.” Since the first bakery opened in 2010, she said, the same core group employees have been with her. These employees are “like family.”
