Astoria woman left to die in burning car on BQE by driver who gets out and hails a cab

Oct. 16, 2017 Staff Report

The victim of the fiery crash on the BQE early Friday was an Astoria woman who was left to die in a flame-engulfed car by the driver who got out and hailed a cab, according to police.

The charred remains of Harleen Grewal, 25, of Astoria, were discovered in the front seat of the vehicle after the FDNY put out the flames out from the 4 am crash.

Grewal was left in a 2007 Infiniti G35 sedan to burn to death by Saeed Ahmad, 23, of Brooklyn who nonchalantly got out of the car, hailed a cab and took it to Maimonides Hospital in Borough Park.

Video obtained by ABC 7 shows the car in flames as he walks toward a cab, gets inside, and is driven away.

“Can I get a ride?” he can be heard asking the taxi driver.

The NYPD caught up with Ahmed at Maimonides, where he was being treated for burns.

Police later arrested him on charges of criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and

speeding.

According to police, Ahmad lost control of his car as it was heading westbound near Centre Street in Red Hook. The car burst into flames after striking a concrete barrier.
