The lottery opened today for 21 affordable units that are part of a luxury building that is going up by Socrates Sculpture Park.
The building, called Vernon Tower, is eight stories tall and consists of 105 units. Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2017.
The tower, located at 11-06 31st Drive, sits directly across from Socrates Sculpture Park and just a few blocks from the Noguchi Museum and waterfront promenade.
Half of the 21 affordable units that are up for grabs have been set aside for people who reside in Community Board 1, which consists of Astoria, Dutch Kills and a sliver of Woodside.
The units are for City residents who earn up to 60 percent of the area median, with rents going from $867/month for studios and $1,123/month two-bedrooms. There are five studios, five one-bedrooms and 11 two-bedroom units on offer.
Applications close January 8, 2018.
The building comes with amenities such as a fitness center, landscaped green roof deck, a recreation room, bike storage and in-unit washer/dryer.
A 24-hour doorman will be stationed in the lobby as well as a hi-tech security system throughout.

@mary Finn. With minimum wage $15/hr at 40hrs is 600 a week at 52 weeks is approx 32k a year. Call me crazy but giving subsidized breaks so entry level low skilled employees can live in luxury apts seems foolish. Working people learn to live within their means. Give less handouts, but investments should be in real job training where people working struggling to get ahead have the means to learn to earn more, makes all the difference in the world. Teach a man to fish.
You mean queensbridge, ravenswood, Astoria Houses, and woodside Houses aren’t enough housing for poor people??? Maybe a small break for some middle class folks who are subsidizing all the developments would be nice too. Who can afford 2400 for a 2 bedroom?? NYC is awesome for only the rich and poor that get the best deals.
That is right! Astoria is surrounded by housing projects and homeless shelters. Its a great place to live. Its very economically diverse for all. It is not some upscale neighborhood.
It’s for working people. You need a minimum of 30K for one person. What do you think that is, welfare? Plenty of people working two jobs at minimum wage barely make that. Are they chopped liver? That’s what office workers, retail clerks and many other honest folks see.
I make more low money for year. Why not put for poor people in Astoria.

More luxury condos for the HIPSTERS. I hate all luxury condo developers, unless they are running for president, in which case I will vote them into power so it’s easier for them to build luxury condos.
